Brave Spartan Women
1597/99 | Otto Van Veen
Depicted is a story about Spartan women´s bravery in successfully defending the city of Sparta on their own against the Messenians, while their men are away on military campaign. When the Spartan soldiers return, they only recognize their armed women in front of Sparta as they undress. Having no time to find their own partner, they engage intimately with whomever. Afterwards, a temple dedicated to the Armed Venus was built to honour the women´s victory.
