Box Lid with Centaur

Portrait of the Elector in a Round Box Two flat round boxes feature portrait roundels of Duke Frederick the Wise, Elector of Saxony, and his mistress, Anna. The reliefs celebrate their secret relationship, revealed only to those allowed to open the boxes. The centaur on the lid is probably a reference to Frederick’s virility, the siren-like creature on the other lid to Anna’s seductive charms.
