Pictures formed from coloured wax were highly prized during the 16th and 17th centuries. The small-format scenes with multiple figures demanded particular artistry. A master of this technique was Daniel Neuberger, active in Vienna as court sculptor to Emperor Ferdinand III. He created reliefs of virtuosic delicacy and precision, for which he sometimes used gemstones as the support. His work also displays inspiration from cameos of the period around 1600.
