Annunciation to the Virgin and Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine, so-called Heiligenkreuz Altar

The scenes, as though set on a stage, depict two virgins, the Madonna and Saint Catherine, who are being married to Christ. A French painter, presumably itinerant in Central Europe, painted the picture probably for a convent. The work is typical of the “International” or “Courtly” Gothic style prevailing throughout Europe around 1400.
