Allegory to the Turkish War in Hungary

ca. 1603 | Adriaen de Vries

The large relief features the war against the Turks that broke out in 1593 in Hungary. The location of the fighting is indicated by personifications of the Danube and Sava rivers. On the left Minerva is freeing Hungaria from her fetters while a goddess of victory removes the half-moon from her head. As a sign of his successful restoration of Christianity in the area, Rudolf II is presented with a mitre.
