Numerous portraits from the 15th and 16th centuries have original decorative paintings, heraldic or pictorial representations on the reverse, which allow important conclusions to be drawn about the function of the works and who commissioned them. The presentation introduces some of these normally invisible reverse sides of paintings in the KHM Vienna and concludes with a particularly curious example that has only recently been deciphered.
