The ‘loquaciousness’ of photography - Illustrated publications of the imperial collections in Vienna in the 19th century.
A look into the library of the Kunsthistorisches Museum reveals the diversity of art reproductions in the second half of the 19th century on the basis of publications from the imperial collections in Vienna. The transition from manual processes such as woodcuts, copperplate engravings or etchings to photographic methods was not only subject to technical developments, but was also significantly accompanied by fundamental discussions in art history about the artistic and ideological value of illustrative aids.
