Provenance research at the Kunsthistorisches Museum

9 February 2021

Conversation between provenance researcher & historian Monika Löscher and art historian Daniel Uchtmann
(in German language)

Since 1998, the Kunsthistorisches Museum has been researching the origin (provenance) of all art and cultural artefacts that came to the museum in the course of or as a consequence of the National Socialist regime of violence, based on the Federal Act on the Restitution of Works of Art and Other Movable Cultural Property from Austrian Federal Museums and Collections. Since then, around 1000 objects have been returned to their original owners or their legal successors.

Monika Löscher talks to Daniel Uchtmann, art historian and art mediator at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, about her areas of work, successful restitutions and the personal stories behind them. She has been working on behalf of the Commission for Provenance Research at the Kunsthistorisches Museum since 2009.
