Lecture by historian and curator Marie-Louise von Plessen
(in German language)

Pineapple fever marketed the colonial fruit across Europe for over 500 years until it was canned for mass consumption from 1900 onwards. Columbus sparked a competition between sovereigns in Europe around 1500, and the whole of England succumbed to pineapple mania. In Virginia, Scotland, Holland, Germany, Russia and France, kings, princes, clergy and citizens competed to grow them.
