Michaelina Wautier: Uncovering the Artist through Technical Studies
Lecture by Kirsten Derks, University of Antwerp
Presentation and moderation by Michael Odlozil, restorer at the Picture Gallery of the Kunsthistorisches Museum

The artist Michaelina Wautier (c. 1614–1689) remains something of a mystery!
With few archival records about her life, it is her paintings that speak most clearly for her. By studying her works through technical examination, we can begin to uncover more about Wautier’s artistic practice and perhaps even her personality. These studies offer insights into how she worked and the circles in which she moved.
In her lecture, Kirsten Derks delves into the findings from the technical research undertaken in preparation for the exhibition „Michaelina Wautier, Painter“, on view at Kunsthistorisches Museum from 30. Sept. 2025 – 22. Feb. 2026.
