Laura - A name and its abysmal interpretations

19 February 2024

Lecture by Andreas Kablitz, Petrarca Inst. Cologne
(in German language)

Linguistics teaches us that proper names have the peculiarity that they designate someone or something without meaning anything. This characteristic feature of proper names, however, seems to invite us to speculatively extract a meaning from them. Rarely has this concern been pursued with such vigour as in the poetry of Francesco Petrarch. The lecture presented here aims to explore his play with the name Lauras.
