‘Higher powers’ at eye level

30 August 2021

Conversation between Father Schörghofer & art historian Daniel Uchtmann
(in German language)

With the arrival of the pandemic in Austria, the famous sight of the plague column on the Graben in Vienna was reactivated as an instrument of piety and votive offering. A photo as an introduction to the exhibition Higher Powers bears witness to this. In the exhibition itself, biblical conflagrations, papal regalia, Christian crusade ideas, rosaries and domestic altars are in dialogue with ancient deities and non-European cultures and their religious ideas - at eye level? European-Christian viewing habits are challenged on the one hand, and on the other, perhaps unknown parallels are revealed.
