Exceptional phenomena. The first female federal museum directors

12 June 2024

Lecture by archivist and historian Susanne Hehenberger
(in German language)

In most Austrian federal museums, it took a relatively long time for female researchers to assume the top management position. The first female director of a federal museum was the anthropologist Etta Becker-Donner at the Museum of Ethnology from 1955 to 1975. From 1973 to 1981, the art historian Friderike Klauner was the ‘First Director’ of the Kunsthistorisches Museum. The lecture is dedicated to the professional biographies of these two pioneers in scientific museum management.
