»...as if they were surpassing nature« The Miseroni stone cutting dynasty
5 April 2023
Lecture by Paulus Rainer
(in German language)

No other family is more important in the art of stone carving than the Miseroni family. Giorgio Vasari praised their works in the highest terms, Sandrart called them ‘marvellous rarities’. Their art was always at the cutting edge of current scientific discourse, combining the extraordinary natural product with virtuoso mastery. Four generations of this artistic dynasty worked for the imperial family, and the collections of the Kunsthistorisches Museum contain over two hundred and twenty of their artworks from the 16th and 17th centuries. Their essence will be traced in the lecture.
