The unidentified young lady is wearing the rich, worldly dress of an aristocrat. Characteristic of van Dyck’s highly praised portraiture are both the way he has perfectly captured the profound facial expression, as well as the reproduction of myriad surface effects. Subtle contrast can be seen between the gently wavy hair, the scintillating silk, the delicate tracery of the lace, the gleam of the pearls and glitter of the gold chains, all set against the dark background.
