Winged Altarpiece (so-called „Mömpelgard Altarpiece“)

This altarpiece has more pictures in it than any other contemporary German artwork. It was commissioned for the Protestant church at Montbéliard before the Reformation categorically banned all images from churches. The inscriptions are taken from Martin Luther’s German translation of the Bible and refer to the prominence of the Word in Protestant thinking.
