Winged Altar Piece

around 1520/25 | Cornelis Engebrechtsz.

The narrative talent of the Dutch painter can be seen here in this small altarpiece with the depiction of the history of the Syrian captain Naaman from the Second Book of the Kings of the Old Testament: in the foreground is the cleansing of Naaman from leprosy by the prophet Elisha in Jordan; in the middle, the prophet is refusing to accept presents; in the background Gehasi, servant of the prophet, is depicted secretly asking for presents. On the outer sides of the wings, linking up to the healing theme of the middle picture, the blessed Kosmas and Damian, patron saints of the art of healing, are represented.
