Vision of Saint Jerome

around 1659/62 | Guido Cagnacci

Cagnacci was called to the court of Emperor Leopold I in Vienna in 1658. There he painted a number of pictures, including this St. Jerome, who hears the trombone of the Last Judgement while translating the Holy Bible. We know that this Father of the Latin Church was originally depicted “looking towards a trumpet in the sky”; thus the height of the picture must have been reduced by ca. 20 cm. Characteristic of Cagnacci are the sensual depiction of the still-youthful body and the accessories that are lying around as well as the mannered gestures of the startled man.
