Venus and Adonis

around 1620 | Abraham Janssen

While resting under a tree, Venus warns her lover Adonis of the dangers of his passion for hunting wild animals, and tells him the story of Hippomenes and Atalanta whom she once punished by turning into lions. The balanced composition, the smooth, very graphic seeming bodies and the stiff folds of the robes are characteristic for the classical, cool style of Janssens. He left the composition of the landscape to the specialist Jan Wildens, who also worked for Rubens.
