Thronende Muttergöttin

4. - 3. Jh. v. Chr.

The mother-goddess motif is represented by this small limestone group from the Hellenistic period. The woman, clothed in a long robe, wears the polos or crown of a goddess and is bejeweled with earrings and throat-chains. In her arms is a small child wrapped in a blanket and wearing a high bonnet. The worsening quality of the local Cypriot sculpture in the 4th century B. C. is clear from the rough use of the chip-cut technique on this statuette.
