The Raising of the Youth of Nain

around 1565/70 | Paolo Caliari, gen. Veronese

The shimmering jewel-like tones of the robes glow before the cool background of the sky and architecture, lending a worldly, festive effect to the New Testament scene. The element of surprise, done in typical Mannerist fashion, arises from Veronese moving the main character, the youth awakened from death, into the lower left-hand corner of the painting, only half of him being visible. The grateful mother, however, is placed in the middle of the composition.
