The Feast under the Maypole

Aristocrats, middle-class citizens and peasants have gathered around a maypole. Thus it is springtime, Ruysdael’s favourite season to depict. In his early pictures the painter used restrained, almost monochromatic colouration (much like Jan van Goyen, with whom he shared an artistick inship). Dated 1655, this painting demonstrates more powerful colouration as well as an interest in details related to the narrative and genre, aspects that characterise Ruysdael’s mature work.
