The Augsburg Patrician Ulrich Sulzer

Christoph Amberger was the leading portrait painter of the Augsburg patriciate in the second quarter of the 16th century. Developed under the influence of Venetian portrait art, Amberger’s art is characterised by dark, warm colouring, soft tonal transitions and precise depiction of the various materials. Ulrich Sulzer (1463–1545) was the scion of a successful merchant family and member of the Council. The portrait was created to mark his acceptance into the imperial city patriciate in 1538.
