Taken aback by the content of a revelation, the Apostle Paul has stopped writing for a moment. Before the day of the Lord arrives, the Antichrist will rule the world. On behalf of all the faithful the Thessalonians are to persevere in seeking everlasting life. A second version of the painting (Kunsthalle Bremen) with a quotation from the Second Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians further elucidates the theme. The picture was painted in Rembrandt’s immediate circle and has been attributed by several scholars to Govaert Flinck.
