The Antwerp Citizen Kerckhoven

about 1640 | Abraham de Vries

In the inventory of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm (1659), this picture is described as follows: portrait of “a citizen of Antorff by the name of Kerckhouen, dressed in black with a cape wrapped about him, his hair and beard brown [...] original by de Vries”. In a composition of high contrast, De Vries clearly emphasises the face of his subject but also differentiates the parts that remain dark.
