The Angel Appears to Hagar in the Desert around 1585

In the Old Testament story, Abraham’s second wife Hagar and their son Ishmael are driven into the desert by his jealous wife Sarah. They are close to dying of thirst, yet God‘s herald creates a well. This picture which is probably mostly done by the artist’s own hand is artistically most impressive in its orange and green colouring and the atmospheric expressiveness of the desert landscape.
