Summoning the Sons of Zebedee

1515 | Marco Basaiti

After he had summoned Peter and Andrew to follow him as disciples, Christ met James and John, the sons of Zebedee, on the banks of Lake Genezareth. He also asked them to go with him. Stimulated by the subtle colour compositions of his teacher Giovanni Bellini and his fellow student Giorgione, Basaiti used gentle honey-coloured light and the complementary blue of the robes, water and sky to create a harmonious mood of figures and landscape.
