Small Self Portrait

In this informal portrait, Rembrandt encounters the viewer in everyday clothes – brown coat and red woollen shirt. With advancing age, the artist’s self-portraits are dominated by simplicity of appearance and viscous paint. The posture of the head and the facial expression resemble the self-portrait dated 1652 (GG 411). The subsequent reduction in format size gives the painting a somewhat crammed feel.
