Riding Lesson: Ballotade

ca. 1665/66

This tapestry from a series of eight on the fine art of riding shows a lesson in ballotade, whereby the jumping horse briefly seems to pause horizontally in the air. In Brussels, the Leyniers and Reydams workshops, which often, as in this series, collaborated, had made particular names for themselves in the production of tapestries with subjects relating to dressage.
