Queen Mary of Hungary as a Widow

This portrait bust depicts Mary, Dowager Queen of Hungary (1505–1558), who ruled the Burgundian-Habsburg Netherlands for her brother, Emperor Charles V. She commissioned a series of life-sized bronze sculptures of members of her family from the sculptor Leone Leoni. They were meant to ensure the visual presence of the Habsburg dynasty on the European political stage.
