Amberger was more greatly influenced than his contemporaries by Italian painting. This is seen here especially in the emphatic corporeality of the figure, created by a forced perspective, as well as in the spatial arrangement in front of a severe architectural background, with light and shadow providing the structure. The inscription gives the age of the unknown subject (24) and date of the picture. This is the companion piece to “Portrait of a Woman” (Inv. No. GG 888). Amberger’s authorship has repeatedly been questioned.
