Plate with Depiction of the Month February
2nd half 16th c.
In the 16th century, the French city of Limoges was a European centre for the production of painted enamel tableware. These plates depict the months of the year. Modelled on engravings by Étienne Delaune, they are decorated in grisaille, then much in fashion at the French court. The plates and bowls were never actually used but served purposes of princely representation.
