Peasant‘s Joy (‘Boerenvreugd’),

around 1649 | David III. Ryckaert

Ryckaert depicts subjects similar to those in Teniers’ paintings; they are, however, more monumental and there is less cheerfulness in his Peasants’ Joys. His peasants are also drinking and dancing but their faces do not express jollity and high spirits. The only smiling figure in this composition is clearly differentiated from the peasant women by her expensive clothes and her lapdog. This is the painter’s wife, Jacoba Pallemans.
