Miracle of St. Agnes

Through God’s help, the Christian Agnes is saved from the heathen attempting to rape her. The church of Sant’Agnese was built on the site in Rome where she later died as a martyr. For its high altar, the sculptor Alessandro Algardi designed a monumental terracotta relief, which he had reproduced several times in small bronze replicas such as the one here.
