Mary with Child and Saint Rosalie, Peter and Paul

Van Dyck painted this altar picture for the chapel in the House of Vows of the Jesuit Lay Brotherhood of Celibate Men in Antwerp, of which he was a member. The theme is also Jesuit: Saint Rosalie receives the wreath of roses, the leading apostles Peter and Paul are on each side of the Madonna: veneration of the Virgin Mary, loyalty to Rome and the Pope, and trust in the mediating function of the saints are all central concerns of this Counter-Reformation fraternity.
