Market Scene

about 1560/65 | Pieter Aertsen

In addition to a large number of paintings on religious themes, Aertsen specialised in a new type of picture that he himself had developed, the market painting. With his monumental figures, turned powerfully with their gaze directed at the viewer, Aertsen draws on Italian inspiration. The aggressive Netherlandish realism and “humble” subject matter (according to the values of the time) are ennobled here by a “higher” style borrowed from the Italian Renaissance.
