Madonna and Child

ca. 1465 | Antonio Rossellino

The relief captivates through the subtle working of the marble, which seems to remove the hardness of the stone: Mary’s veil flows in delicate folds, and the cheeks of the child are of nearly palpable softness. The goldfinch in the boy’s hand refers to the Passion of Christ. The masterpiece was already popular during the 15th century through inexpensive copies in painted plaster.
