Lidded Cup

In 1588 Emperor Rudolf II called Ottavio Miseroni to Prague to establish a workshop for working with precious stones. He was a member of a Milan family that had been employed by Rudolf’s father, Maximilian II. Over a long career, Ottavio developed an exceptional mastery in using the natural shape and colouration of the stones in the design and decoration of his vessels. In recognition of his artistry, the emperor ennobled him in 1608.
