Large Forest Landscape with the Saint Francisco Borja

Jacques d’Arthois was a successful landscape artist who worked quickly and effortlessly. This virtuosic painting was purchased from the Jesuit College in Bruges in 1776 together with its counterpart (Inv.-Nr. GG 468). Its provenance explains the subject of the picture: Francisco Borja (1510–1572, canonised 1671), a Spanish nobleman, became the third Jesuit General in Rome.
