King Charles IX of France

In 1570 Charles IX (1550–1574) married the Habsburg princess Elisabeth. Her uncle, Archduke Ferdinand II of Tyrol, represented the king at the wedding ceremonies and received a number of precious thank-you gifts, among them the Saliera, the Saint Michael’s Cup and the Onyx Ewer. The realistic details in the depiction of the royal sitter are in keeping with the tradition of Netherlandish portrait painting.
