Junger Mann mit Lorbeerkranz

1. Viertel 5. Jh. v. Chr.

This head belongs to the statue type of the man with wreath which was familiar from the end of the sixth century B. C. onwards. Several examples – ranging from small-scale to larger-than-life – have been preserved. It originally belonged to a life-size votive statue. The oval face with its low brow, almond-shaped, flat eyes, pointed nose, closed, smiling mouth and jutting chin evinces the characteristic features of the Cypriot-archaic style of the early years of the fifth century B. C. A row of small, stylized spiral curls of hair frames the face beneath a laurel wreath. The hair on the upper portion of the head is formed by strands radiating from the crown and tied into a roll at the back of the neck.
