Jacomo de Cachiopin

When van Dyck returned to Antwerp from England for one year in 1634, he portrayed friends, both artists and patrons of the arts, including Jacomo de Cachiopin (1591/92–1659). Van Dyck and the passionate collector shared a common love of Venetian painting. This deep, mutual understanding may well explain the very private nature of the portrait. Cachiopin’s inward-looking state of mind is the expression of a melancholic temperament.
