Italian Landscape with Ruined Aqueduct

Although there is no evidence that Berchem ever visited Italy, he specialised in Italianate landscapes and pastoral scenes. This picture is a free rendering of a composition by Jan Asselijn (Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum) depicting the ruined aqueduct near Frascati. Berchem mainly changed figures and animals, putting greater emphasis on them through his use of light and colour.
