Infante Balthasar Charles (1629–1646)

Balthasar Charles was the son of King Philip IV and his first wife Elisabeth of France. The portrait dates from the years when a marriage was planned between the promising heir to the Spanish throne and his cousin, Mariana of Austria. His early death caused by a sudden fever provoked the wi dowed king to marry Mariana himself in order to ensure the royal issue in Spain.
