Fortsetzung des Triumphzuges: Vorführung des Kriegsmaterials

1555/60

This tapestry belongs to a ten-part series depicting scenes from the Portuguese conquest of parts of India in the middle of the sixteenth century. The artist who produced the designs clearly had access to detailed reports. Among them was a depiction of João de Castro’s triumphal entry into Goa in 1547, accompanied by Portuguese soldiers from different services. Note the artillery troops in the foreground who have shouldered their matchlock rifles.
