Flora

around 1635 | Jan Boeckhorst

The Roman Goddess of flower and blossoms, but also of spring, is depicted here in a most earthly fashion as a generously endowed, female halflength figure with naked torso. Her untroubled youth corresponds to spring which she embodies as the protector of flowers and blossoms. She wears a bouquet of flowers in her wildly flowing hair and carries other flowers such as tulips, lilies, roses and narcissuses. The picture originates from a four-part series of the seasons. Stylistically Boeckhorst is indebted above all to Peter Paul Rubens, as shown here by the three-dimensional presence of the powerful body.
