Family Portrait

around 1585 | Bartolomeo Passarotti

The painter combines three generations in this family picture. The bare, undecorated room is designed with the greatest simplicity; in a composition designed to appear as if by chance, the figures are arranged in similarly simple fashion with ordinary seeming physiognomy. Only the hand movements of the grandmother and grandchild which express a close relationship, and the father’s expressive gestures, add depth to the supposedly spontaneous observation. Passarotti was Bologna’s most important portraitist in the 16th century.
