Erzherzog Ferdinand Karl von Tirol (1628-1662) zu Pferd

2. Drittel 17. Jahrhundert | Francesco Montelatici, gen. Cecco Bravo

Ferdinand Karl (1628–1662) was the eldest son of Archduke Leopold V and Claudia de’Medici. In 1646 he became governor of the Tyrol. This portrait depicts him as a triumphant general over a battlefield. This could allude to the Thirty Years’ War, which threatened the country's borders, especially in Ferdinand Karl's second year of government. In 1653 Justus Sustermans (1579–1681) came to Innsbruck in order to paint portraits of the archduke’s family. He probably also began the great equestrian portrait of the Archduke, which Cecco Bravo (1607–1661) subsequently reworked and completed.
