Erzherzog Ferdinand II. (1529-1595), Kniestück

nach 1557 | Francesco Terzio

Since 1547 Archduke Ferdinand II had been governor of Bohemia. This painting is set in the year of his secret marriage to the Philippine Welser, 1557. The couple got married by Ferdinand’s father confessor Johann von Cavallerii at Bresnitz Castle. The Archduke is shown in a Spanish traditional costume and wears the Chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece on his breast. Ferdinand was one of the most significant collectors of the Renaissance and had built at Ambras Castle the oldest Kunst- und Wunderkammer (chamber of arts and curiosities) preserved in situ.
