Elector John George III of Saxony
1687–91 | Ignaz Elhafen
The series of eight equestrian portraits illustrates the increased military self-confidence of the Habsburgs under Emperor Leopold I. The small panels were not produced as autonomous artworks, but probably as adornment for a piece of princely furniture. In his efforts to create portraits of those depicted, Ignaz Elhafen sometimes used coins as prototypes.
